Unlocking my unstoppable with the extended eakin freeseal® range

Posted on

So, what’s new?

eakin® has released a new range of freeseal® to cater for every stoma out there.

First up, we have the eakin freeseal® air:

This is a seal that is 1.8mm thin and comes in three starter hole sizes: 10mm, 18mm and 30mm.

It is perfect for a stoma that sits flush to the skin or is retracted as it is super thin and feels ‘barely there’.

Next up is the eakin freeseal® versa:

This is my favourite. It is 3.2mm thick and comes with the option of two starter hole sizes: 18mm and 30mm. Due to its extra depth, it has so much versatility, fitting into dips and creases and scars. Even with the thicker profile it still isn’t any more noticeable and it feels very secure.

Why I like it:

Having the different starter hole sizes has totally won me over. Previously, I had to stretch my seal and reshape it to fit my stoma, every seal turned out different and stretching it thinned the material and left my skin vulnerable in places. My stoma is currently about 30-35mm so the eakin freeseal® versa with the 30mm starter hole is perfect for me, I don’t even have to shape it, it just fits right into place for me.

With the eakin freeseal® versa being slightly thicker, the indents in my skin are better covered, my skin feels completely protected having that extra shield there and the seal itself feels more robust. Having quite liquid output, I was always feeling a little burn here and there a few hours into my new bag but with the freeseal® versa I don’t feel this at all!

Application:

eakin freeseal® are so easy to apply, the packaging is discreet, lightweight and easy to open. The seal comes in two plastic outer layers that peel off easily leaving you with the freeseal® itself. After doing all of my normal bag routine whilst waiting for my barrier spray to dry, I open up my freeseal® so it’s ready to go. You simply pull the ring onto your skin around your stoma almost like you would put on a rollneck jumper, I lightly press mine into place then put my bag straight on top. Alternatively, you could put your freeseal® straight onto your bag but do what works best for you.

Building confidence:

Bag leaks are one of the most stressful things about being an ostomate, it is so easy to miss an event just because the confidence isn’t there.

The eakin freeseal® is perfect for avoiding this and now having five different seal sizes, there is something for everyone.

I can honestly say that with the eakin freeseal® versa 30mm, I have had no sign of the start of a leak. Whilst using the eakin freeseal® versa my bag has lasted a whole extra day longer than normal without a leak or sore skin, so it has really increased my confidence.

Using an eakin freeseal® has been the best choice I have ever made. It is so kind to my skin whilst being so easy to apply and remove and it honestly doesn’t add any fuss at all to my bag routine but gives my bag so much extra life. If you want to be unstoppable go and get yourself a sample now!

Celebrating my ostomy journey

Posted on

Reflecting on 2024 has made me realise it was a huge year for learning, growth, and resilience.

Reflecting

2022 me was adamant that I didn’t want a stoma bag. My surgery was emergency, I was told it was my only option, and even then I still questioned whether just not waking up at all would be that bad.

The last year has really helped me find myself again, practice gratitude, and learn to love my body… even with my little bag attached to my stomach.

Embracing my stoma

2024 allowed me to go on my first summer holiday, having my stoma bag on show everyday. I went to several concerts, and had the best time! I enjoyed a few weekends away, with The Get Together being one of best and biggest highlights.

Exercise

My physical and mental health has soared within in the last year. My exercise routine is probably the best it’s been pre-surgery. After many years feeling unwell, and now feeling the healthiest that I’ve felt in years I feel so privileged to be able to exercise and I’m so appreciative that I can move my body. As well as the gym, I’m trying to be more consistent with Pilates and I’ve just recently started the Couch to 5K! Running has always been something I’ve been extra cautious with due to my stoma but it’s been a smooth ride so far, and I’m excited for a new challenge!

Products

Being confident in the stoma products I use has helped me to take the plunge and try new things. I’m so thankful that my stoma bags, eakin freeseal®, and REFRESH 3in1 spray work so well for me. I feel like my bag routine is the perfect fit for me!

Community & Tips

As much as I’m pushing myself this year, I’m also making sure I have time for self care, whether that’s reading a book, watching a comfort show or just resting.

I also feel so grateful for the amazing ostomy community, I’m so lucky to be able to use my platform to connect with so many wonderful people, who are also helping to break the stigma and use their social media to help educate others. And I’m delighted with the friendships I’ve made too.

This year will be a year of wedding planning, pushing myself, ticking off goals and embracing my body. All things that I wouldn’t be able to do today without my stoma!

Unlock your unstoppable: the power of the extended eakin freeseal® range

Let me tell you about the new eakin freeseal® range – it’s a game-changer! I trialled the versa 18mm (product code 839027) for two weeks, and I have to say, I’m seriously impressed. Whether you’re looking for a discreet, super-thin seal or something thicker to help with dips and creases, this range has you covered. And the best part? It’s designed to fit every stoma shape and size, so there’s something for everyone.

Let me explain the new range (in case you haven’t already heard!)

First up, we have the eakin freeseal® air. This seal comes in two thickness options – 1.8mm and 2.4mm and starter hole sizes of 10mm, 18mm, and 30mm. So, who is this best for? If you have a retracted, flush, or smaller stoma, this is a fantastic choice. It’s super thin, offering discretion and comfort. It still has amazing absorbent properties to prevent leaks too. Plus, it removes cleanly in one piece, making bag changes a breeze.

Next up is the eakin freeseal®versa. This one is thicker, at 3.2mm, and comes in starter hole sizes of 18mm and 30mm. I would say this would suit you if you have dips or creases around your stoma. It evens out the skin, making it so much easier to apply your stoma bag. And while it’s thick, it’s also flexible, unlike many competitors – so you can shape it perfectly around your stoma without any hassle.

What I absolutely love about this new range is how inclusive it is. There’s genuinely something for everyone, no matter your stoma’s size or shape.

My two-week trial of the versa 18mm

For two weeks, I trailed the versa 18mm and let me just say – I’m impressed. With it being the thickest of the two new freeseal®, I was curious about how it would feel to wear. Once it was on, though, it was a perfect fit around my stoma (check out the photo below for proof!).

Getting that snug fit is so important when choosing the right seal because it prevents leaks and protects your skin. With the versa, I had an extra layer of protection, which not only increased the wear time of my stoma bag but also gave my skin the care it needed.

Over the two weeks, I went about my usual busy routine – commuting into London for work, hitting the gym, and doing Pilates—and guess what? It didn’t budge! I didn’t experience any leaks or irritation, and honestly, it was so comfortable I forgot I even had it on. That kind of reliability gives me such a confidence boost because I know my bag is secure and leak-proof.

Confidence in every moment

eakin® slogan, ‘Unlock your unstoppable’, honestly couldn’t be more fitting. They’ve created not just one but five seals to combat one of the biggest challenges we face as ostomates—bag leaks. Speaking from experience, having a leak can be mortifying, especially in public. Knowing there’s a solution to this is a complete game-changer.

Why choose the extended range?

The new eakin freeseal® options cater to:

  • Varied stoma shapes and sizes: ensuring a better fit for everyone, giving you a choice.
  • Sensitive skin: gentle on your skin while providing strong adhesion, your peristomal skin will thank you!
  • Enhanced flexibility: which is perfect for active lifestyles, like mine!

I’m genuinely so impressed with the new eakin freeseal® extended range. Whether it’s the air or the versa, there’s a seal for everyone. For me, having a seal I can rely on has made such a difference in my confidence and how I go about my day. If you’re looking for something that truly works and helps you feel unstoppable, give this range a try. It’s been a game-changer for me, and I’m sure it will be for you too!

Dealing with holiday stress

Posted on

Christmas is a super busy time with festivities, indulging in food and having a busier social schedule than usual!

Food over Christmas

High fibre foods may cause your stoma bag to balloon, or pancake. To deal with this I make sure to chew the different foods I’m eating really well and also limit my intake of fizzy drinks and alcohol. With all the different foods and treats over Christmas it’s so tempting to indulge. However, I try to stick to foods that are gentle on my digestive system and I know what cause me blockages.

Socialising over Christmas

I love Christmas and I love spending loads of time with friends and family. Ahead of a night out or a social event I always pack an emergency kit with essentials, such as REFRESH 3in1, eakin freeseal®, Pelican barrier wipes, hand sanitiser, and neutralising drops.

Dressing comfortably

As much as I enjoy dressing up over Christmas I always choose outfits that are comfortable and stoma friendly. Being comfortable in an outfit allows you to be more confident with your stoma and the festive food and drinks you consume

Mindfulness & self-care

It’s easy to feel run down over the Christmas period, it’s important to be mindful and take some alone time to rest and recover during all the Christmas fun. Be present in the moment and don’t stress about your bag being noticeable or noisy! Your loved ones will be so happy to be spending quality time with you and making Christmas memories.

I’ve been using the eakin freeseal® versa (product code 839027) and it’s truly been a game-changer for my stoma care.

Why the extended range works for me

The Versa has an overall diameter of 48mm and an inner diameter of 18mm, which allows me to shape it perfectly to my stoma and body. What’s great about this size is its flexibility – I can easily mould it to fit snugly around my stoma, especially with the scars I have. It fills those uneven areas effectively, creating a reliable seal and stopping leaks before they start.

Easy application, perfect fit

One of the things I love most is how easy the eakin freeseal® is to apply. It adapts so well to my body shape, even as it changes throughout the day, and gives me a secure, comfortable fit that I can trust. No matter how active or relaxed my day is, I don’t have to worry about leaks or discomfort.

Confidence that moves with you

Whether I’m out walking, spending time with friends, or just taking a moment to relax, the eakin freeseal® versa moves with me. It gives me the confidence to focus on what really matters—living life to the fullest, without worry or hesitation.

Ready to unlock your unstoppable?

If you’re curious about the extended range, I’d recommend giving the eakin freeseal® versa a try. It’s made such a difference for me. If you would like to try a sample of eakin freeseal®  please click here.

Christmas with a stoma

Posted on

Is there any better time than Christmas? Lights around the house, ornaments on the tree, gingerbread scented candles, food within arm reach all day long! I absolutely love it, but it is a time of year with a lot of challenges.

Christmas can be hugely stressful and overstimulating particularly whilst considering your stoma, here are some tips on how to manage the season a little better.

Food

Through December there is just so much food, nibbles on the desk at work, big tubs of chocolate, Christmas lunches with all the trimmings and the desserts. I don’t have any huge issues with food, my main problem is bag bursts through the night after eating a lot.

Pick food choices that work for you, don’t feel pressured into a roast dinner if you can’t eat most of the contents, have a pasta dish or a pizza if it suits you better.

Prepare for the outcome! For this I make sure I have some waterproof bed mats just to save my bedding and empty my bag as close to going to sleep as I can even if my eyes are half shut.

Drinks

I love a cocktail, but this is an easy time of year to become dehydrated. I tend to drink alcohol and soft drinks at the start of the night but once a party gets going, I usually stick to water until I go to bed, the bonus being I don’t wake up with a headache!

Drink what suits you, maybe a glass of fizz to bring in the new year and orange squash after that, people probably won’t even notice and it’s so worth it to feel good the next day.

Outfits

Wear something comfortable.

I always used to wear jeans for a special occasion, but I’ve got into far too many situations – they are uncomfortable, never have enough space for my bag to fill and have led to a few leaks. I have started to wear leggings or dresses as they tend to give me more room to stretch, I need it for all the food! This year for my work night out I wore a jumpsuit which was so comfortable and didn’t show my bag at all, but I didn’t consider that I would have to pull the whole outfit down every time I visited the bathroom.

Supplies

Working hours change a lot around the Christmas period so it is very important to order your supplies with plenty of time to spare to prepare for missed deliveries or trips away and make sure you have enough of your prescribed medications to avoid a panicked phone call to 111 on Boxing Day.

If you are spending time away from home take at least double what you would normally use, I usually take far too much but I would rather bring it all home than be caught out.

Prioritise yourself

The festive season is an exhausting time of year, long drives to friends and family, early mornings and late nights, socialising for hours on end.

We have always tried to get out and about early in the morning to get some fresh air before all the good food and television starts. I like to spend Christmas day with minimal people and visit family throughout the week to avoid burning out.

Keep some sort of structure or routine, we all know the days between Christmas and New Year morph into one and it is over before you know it. Having routine can help keep some normality and stability in such a busy time.

Don’t be afraid to say no to some things, remember Christmas is a time for relaxing and recharging so make the most of it and make some time for yourself.

Having a stoma will never stop you from enjoying Christmas it is just worth making some small preparations to make the season much more enjoyable.

I hope you all have an amazing Christmas – you deserve it!

Navigating social events with a stoma

Posted on

In the early days of having my stoma I thought my social life would be non-existent. However, I was so wrong. Now that I have my stoma I have a busier social life than ever before.

On the day

On the day of a social event I’ll apply a fresh bag that morning. I’ll be skeptical of what I eat and drink. I’ll make sure to avoid fizzy drinks, spicy foods or anything in particular that may cause my stoma bag to balloon.

Dressing with a stoma

I thought I’d have to avoid certain materials when dressing with a stoma, but I actually find a stoma bag is very discrete and barely noticeable through most outfits. Although, there are different accessories that you can wear, such as stoma tops, a belt, and stoma underwear.

Being prepared

When preparing for a day or night out I always pack my handbag in advance and this gives me the confidence I need ahead of my social outing. I make sure to carry my ‘can’t wait’ card, radar key and extra stoma supplies in case of an emergency,

I also have a REFRESH 3-in-1 spray from Respond in all my handbags! It smells so fresh and it’s my go to product.

Social events are something I now enjoy more than ever before! In the past I would have spent a large amount of time in the bathroom battling my colitis symptoms, the longer I spent in the bathroom the more I stressed myself and made things worse. There were many dinners, outings and parties I missed due to spending the majority of the time on the toilet. Now I ensure I have a fresh bag applied and extra supplies ahead of my outing and I’m good to go.

Since getting my stoma bag, my social life has has been thriving and I couldn’t be happier!

Learning to appreciate life with a stoma

Posted on

I have been guilty of not appreciating my life, most of my life I have been back and forth with my feelings. After surviving a disease that has quite a significant mortality rate I occasionally feel survivor’s guilt, so often I have been told how lucky I am to be alive, but at times I have felt the unluckiest person in the world. I still struggle to accept that I will never have a completely ‘normal’ life but I have learned to appreciate the life I do have and having a stoma does have its perks at times.

I think you can only fully appreciate life when it is so close to being taken from you. On my bad days I just think of the journey I have had, so many people fought for me on that very first day when the odds were stacked against me and so many have helped me since then.

Sometimes it can be hard for anyone to appreciate life, we are so distracted we forget how lucky we are to simply exist. Getting to grips with a stoma can be really tough, it’s so easy to be overcome by emotion, the thought of ever enjoying life again can seem millions of miles away. Each day I am reminded of how beautiful the world is, without my stoma I would never have had a chance to experience everything it has to offer.

Small achievements matter!

We constantly compare ourselves to others, it’s hard not to.

When I had my stoma re-sited in 2022 I felt left behind by all my peers, I was at a standstill whilst they had their ‘big wins’.

Bigger goals feel unrealistic and exhausting, not achieving them leaves me feeling down and unmotivated and sets me in a downwards spiral. Setting smaller goals such as reading a new book, getting to bed earlier, picking a healthier meal keeps me motivated and achieving them lifts my confidence.

Finding joy in life

I look for joy in so many places, I love to look up at the stars and the moon. I love the feeling of sunshine on my skin but also the cold of the snow. I enjoy the sensation of swimming underwater and grass under my feet.

Without my stoma I would never have had the joy of meeting my dog and loving her for 12 years. I would never have had the chance to go to University, to fall in love and to help other people.

Making positive shifts

I’ve spent a long time not looking after myself properly, letting the weeks go by and wishing the days away through tiredness and lack of motivation. Since having my stoma re-sited I have developed better habits, I am eating better, doing more exercise, meeting friends and family more regularly and being more consistent with self-care. I have learned not to be hard on myself, some days feel impossible but after a good meal and sleep I wake up feeling like I can take on the world again.

My advice

To make positive progress, pick milestones that are most important to you and achievable. Society milestones can feel arbitrary, sometimes unrealistic and putting a timeframe on your life can be stressful. Life isn’t linear, there will be setbacks, and small achievements help towards the bigger goal. Celebrate every small win and the big wins will follow.

There is still so much to look forward to, just take your time to recover both physically and mentally. Lean on your family and friends and let all emotion out whenever you need to.

If you are ever struggling to appreciate life with a stoma just take a moment and smell a flower or throw a ball for your dog, feel the grass on your feet or look out to the stars, I promise this will remind you how precious your life is and how important it is to put your stamp on the world.

Having a stoma makes me appreciate life each day, without this little organ poking through my belly I wouldn’t be here enjoying myself.

Men’s health awareness month: my journey with IBD and life with a stoma

Posted on

Men’s Health Awareness Month is personal for me. For many of us, it’s about the real, everyday battles we face with our health—challenges that often stay hidden because we feel we should “tough it out” in silence. One of these battles, for me and countless other men, is living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and adapting to life with a stoma.

This month, I want to share my story, not just to open up about the challenges I’ve faced, but to help break down some of the stigma around these health issues. My hope is that more men can find the support and strength they need to live openly and confidently, without feeling alone or misunderstood.

Living with IBD: my journey so far

IBD is a condition that impacts thousands of men, yet it’s not talked about enough. For those who aren’t familiar, IBD includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis – conditions that lead to chronic inflammation in the digestive tract. The symptoms are far from glamorous: severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and more. IBD is a relentless disease, often striking without warning and affecting every part of daily life, from work to relationships.

For years, I struggled with the idea of talking openly about my experience with IBD. Like many men, I was hesitant to discuss a health issue that felt deeply personal, uncomfortable, and, frankly, embarrassing. Our culture tends to push men toward silence, especially when it comes to “invisible” health issues. I felt like I should handle it on my own, to not be a burden or show weakness. But I’ve learned that keeping these experiences bottled up only makes the journey harder and it’s something that too many men go through alone.

Adapting to life with a stoma

For me, and for some people with severe cases of IBD, there comes a point where a stoma becomes necessary. It can be a life-saving procedure, but it’s also one that fundamentally changes how you see yourself and live each day.

Adjusting to life with a stoma hasn’t been easy, but it has been empowering in ways I never expected. There are physical challenges and times of frustration, but there’s also a sense of reclaiming my life from a disease that has controlled me for so long. Yes, it’s an adjustment, and it comes with its own mental and emotional struggles, especially when it comes to body image and confidence. But what I’ve found is that openness and support have been key to accepting my new normal and moving forward.

Why awareness matters

Men’s Health Awareness Month gives me a chance to share my story in the hope that it might reach others who are struggling, feeling isolated, or unsure of where to turn. IBD and living with a stoma aren’t commonly discussed, but that doesn’t mean they should be hidden. Raising awareness matters because it helps men like us:

  • Recognise the signs and get help early: I ignored my symptoms for too long, and that’s something I hope to change for others. Early diagnosis can be life-changing, and taking symptoms seriously could help avoid or delay severe interventions.
  • Feel supported in our experiences: speaking up about IBD or living with a stoma shouldn’t be taboo. Sharing our stories can be incredible, allowing us to connect with others who truly understand.
  • Find a community: finding others who’ve walked this path has been essential for me. The support I’ve received from the IBD and ostomy communities has been invaluable, and it reminds me that I’m not alone in this journey.

Building a healthier future, together

Men’s Health Awareness Month is a reminder that we’re all in this together. If you’re struggling with IBD or adjusting to life with a stoma, I want you to know that support is out there and reaching out can make all the difference. Living with these health challenges doesn’t have to mean hiding them. By speaking up, seeking help, and connecting with each other, we can create a world where men feel empowered to face their health battles head-on, with dignity and support.

For any man out there fighting a similar battle: you’re not alone. Let’s stand together, break the silence, and move toward a healthier future, where we can live openly, confidently, and fully.

Thank you

Travelling with a stoma

Posted on

Airports

Navigating airports with a stoma bag can be a daunting experience. However, I’ve only had positive encounters. I’m just back from my holiday snd my stoma flagged up for the first time ever, I explained to the staff that I had an ileostomy and they took me into a private room to show them and I was back with my family again within a few minutes. I also had a travel certificate to show staff.

A top tip would be to contact your airline and explain that you have medical supplies to bring and they will allow you extra hand luggage. I also always wear comfy clothes and I’m mindful of what I eat/drink on the day of travel, I avoid spicy food and fizzy drinks to ensure my bag won’t balloon.

Packing

When packing for a holiday I do tend to overpack. I’ll contact Respond a few weeks before my trip to make sure I have all the stock I need. I like to make sure I have extra supplies in my own suitcase, my partners suitcase and in my hand luggage. I like having supplies close to hand in case of an emergency.

Hydration

Whether it’s a sunny holiday or a city break, I always make sure to drink plenty of water to avoid becoming dehydrated! If I feel like I haven’t managed to drink enough I’ll take a dioralyte and electrolytes.

Holiday

Depending on the climate of your location, you may struggle to get your bag to stick. If this is the case I recommend bringing extra supplies, such as the REFRESH 3 in 1 spray to keep the skin healthy and Respond flange extenders to allow your bag extra security, especially if you’re going to be in and out of the water a lot.

And lastly, it’s SO important to enjoy your trip away!
