As an ostomate, there are a few things you can expect when going through airport security. While the process may vary slightly depending on the country and airport, here are some general guidelines on what to expect:

• Before you travel you can request an additional letter from your doctor to state that you need extra ostomy supplies, or a Travel certificate explaining about your ostomy and need for supplies. The security staff then treat this as required medication.
• It’s a good idea to notify staff before you go through security that you have ostomy supplies on you and that you have a stoma. • If you are searched after going through the body scanner, the new machinery and technology in most airports flags the area as a yellow circle if it considers anything unusual, it does not show your actual body or stoma. With new machinery and scanners, you may be asked to show airport staff your stoma bag and have it scanned separately but rest assured, this will be carried out in a private room.

• If you have any specific concerns, you can phone your airport security team before you travel and speak directly to them.
