Your Questions Answered

Skin Care

Q.  There is a baby in my care, who has red, sore skin around her stoma.

Place a Cohesive Slims® seal around the stoma. This will offer protection to the child’s skin against further excoriation as well as helping the skin underneath to heal. As a preventative measure, a new Cohesive Slims® seal should be replaced with every pouch change.

TIP: if a full Cohesive Slims® seal is too big for the stoma, you can break the seal in half and rejoin it. The second half can be placed back in the blister and used at the next pouch change.

For more information please refer to the Cohesive Slims® product page.

Q.  Patients using a convex pouch don’t want anything too bulky.

Cohesive Slims® are perfect for using with convex appliances. They offer complete skin protection but at only 3mm thick, they don’t create too much convexity and allow a slimmer profile pouch.

For further information please refer to our Cohesive Slims® product page.

Q.  The skin around the stoma can become very red, sore and weepy.

Cohesive® Seals can heal sore skin by protecting it against further damage and allowing the skin to heal underneath. Users see fast results once they switch to Cohesive®.

Q.  I see patients with a large area of irritated skin around their stoma.

Large Cohesive® Seals are 98mm in diameter so they can cover a large area of skin. The Cohesive® material is very skin friendly and by absorbing moisture and immobilising digestive enzymes, will help to heal irritated skin.

Q.  I find urostomy patients suffer from large areas of excoriated skin

Given the watery consistency of the output from urostomies, it is useful to cover a large area of skin. Large Cohesive® Seals are 98mm in diameter, so they are ideal for urostomates. The Cohesive® material is very skin friendly and by absorbing moisture and immobilising digestive enzymes, will help to heal irritated skin.

For further information please refer to the  Large Cohesive® Seals product page.

Q.  Poorly sited stomas lie in a valley so I need to protect the surrounding skin.

Large Cohesive® Seals should be rolled out from the centre hole and then placed right up against the stoma. Gently roll the seal back again towards the stoma until you have a snug fit. The rest of the seal can be used to ‘travel up’ the valley so that the surrounding skin is protected.

For further information please refer to the Large Cohesive® Seals product page.

Q.  Some patients are allergic to the flange which results in a red mark around the stoma in the shape of the base plate.

If the patient is generally happy that the pouch is perfect for them and is reluctant to change, simply place a Large Cohesive® Seal around the stoma before you apply the pouch. This will allow the skin to heal and prevent further irritation.
