Caring for a Child with a Stoma

Caring for a Child with a Stoma

Finding out that your child needs ostomy surgery can be an extremely traumatic time for a family. It will be difficult to watch your child undergo the surgical procedures, even though you recognise that it will be for the best. It will also be a huge learning curve for you and your family as you will have to learn new skills to treat your child’s medical condition whilst at the same time juggling your own busy lifestyle.

It is important to remember that help is at hand. You can speak to your child’s doctor or consult with your Stoma Care Nurses who is trained to deal with all aspects of ostomy care. As a parent, relative or carer, it is likely that you will have many questions and concerns about the stoma surgery itself, the appliances the child will have to use, how to change an appliance and the common problems that you may face in the future.
